Soft to Extra Firm

Whether a paint brush has soft or stiff bristles makes a difference in a coating's finish.

Use a soft blend for a smooth finish with fewer brush marks on doors, furniture, and trim.

Use an extra firm blend for crisp lines when cutting in on rough surfaces and around windows, doors, and trim. Works best with thicker coatings.

The Perfect Handle

The ideal paint brush handle varies based on how a painter prefers to control a brush.

Short

Short in length for painting tight spots, where a longer handle would get in the way.

Beavertail

Thick and round for fitting nicely in the palm of a hand.

Thin Angle Sash

Long and skinny to hold like a pencil. (also known as rattail)

Sash

Long with rounded sides for better control in a hand.

Size + Style

Small size paint brushes or widths are good for detailed work on small spaces, like furniture spindles or muntin bars on windows.

Angular style paint brushes are also excellent for getting into tight corners.

Large size paint brushes are good for big surface areas, where a roller isn't ideal, such as fences or curved surfaces, like a boat hull.

Flat style paint brushes are great for laying off paint and coatings on continuous surfaces, as opposed to corners, like angular. However, both can be used for everything depending on your painting style.

Wall or Trim

Within each paint brush series, paint brushes are classified as either a wall or trim brush.

Trim paint brushes are for short strokes when you need more control, so they hold less paint.
Wall paint brushes are for longer strokes when you need to cover more surface area, so they have thicker bristles, or filaments, to hold more paint.
